چکیده

This study investigated the efficiency of two types of media, namely, gravels and sand for their nutrient removal capabilities from wastewater. Different levels of sand depths were also experimented for their removal efficiencies. And for this purpose three laboratory scale vertical upflow constructed wetlands (S1, S2, S3) were established at PHE Laboratory, MNIT, Jaipur. S1was filled with two layers of different size of gravels while S2 and S3 also contained different depths of sand along with the layers of gravels. All the lab scale CWs were fed with the secondary treated water brought from STP Dehlawas, Jaipur. Each system was operated at a hydraulic retention time of 2 days. The study was carried out for a period of three months from February to April, 2013. The results show that sand provides better removal of nutrients from wastewater than gravels, though TKN removal was better with gravels. Both sand and gravel were unable to remove NO3-N from the system as there was an increase in NO3-N in the system. But overall it can be concluded that sand provided more efficient treatment than gravels.

Nutrient removal efficiency by floating macrophytes; Lemna minor and Azolla pinnata in a constructed wetland

The use of constructed wetlands for purifying pre-treated wastewater is a cost effective technology that has been found to be more appropriate for many developing countries. The technology is also environmentally friendly with the wetlands being habitats for many water birds and other aquatic organisms. This study assessed nutrient removal efficiency of two floating macrophytes (Lemna minor...

بررسی کارایی تالاب‌های مصنوعی زیرسطحی هیبریدی در کاهش بار آلی پساب تصفیه‌خانه‌های فاضلاب شهری با استفاده از گیاهان آبزی مختلف

In this paper, the efficiency of four hybrid horizontal-vertical subsurface constructed wetlands which have been built for the tertiary treatment of Isfahan North Wastewater Treatment Facility and removal of organic matters was evaluated. In these constructed wetlands three plants including Phragmites australis, Typha latifolia and Arundo donax were planted and one unit left unplanted. The resu...

Anammox enrichment and constructed wetland inoculation for improvement of wastewater treatment performance

This study contributes to the improvement of low-cost biotechnology for wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). Constructed wetlands are energy efficient engineered systems that mimic the treatment processes of natural wetlands, removing polluting organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from water. The aim of this study was to investigate the advisability of the inoculation of hori...

A Subsurface Upflow Wetland System for Removal of Nutrients and Pathogens in On-Site Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems

On-site sewage treatment and disposal systems, commonly referred to as a septic systems, consist basically of a septic tank and soil adsorption field or drainfield. It may represent a large fraction of nutrient loads and pathogen impacts in vadose zone and groundwater systems. It includes not only nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), but also pathogen indicators such as fecal coliform and Escherich...
